I call myself a lot of things, with “early adopter” and “sucker for marketing” in that list. I pre-ordered the Glock G44 as soon as I was able to do so at the FLGS (Fine Local Gun Shop) and picked up said fantastic plastic machine on Tuesday. I returned to the range this morning to punch more holes on a large sheet of paper with concentric circles on ‘em.
This would make it holes #201-300 (the inaugural first 200 were made Thursday night while the spouse was at the movies), all of them made with CCI MiniMags, zero failures of any kind. They’re all two-handed shots, some at 5 and 7 yards, but mostly at 10 yards with some at 15, and the upper-right target was shot at 25 yards.
I practice at home with a laser cartridge in a Shield 9 1.0 at a distance of 7 yards, so any chance to go farther is great, even with a lighter cartridge.
At the risk of sounding like some children’s book, this would be “My First Glock(TM),” although I did take a handgun class with a G19 that I’d rented from the range last summer. The trigger pull and reset are exactly like the G19 (for better or for worse - at least it’s consistent), and I think I’ve convinced one of the instructors at the range to go get one (I’m now on his shit list – I’m kidding… I think – for eating into his vacation funds).
One observation made by the range instructors had to do with the G44’s weight. It’s significantly lighter than the G19, and while it kinda sorta behaves like the older sibling, the weight difference would add an acclimation factor when training with the G19. A minor quibble, as the G44 would be a great tool for brand-new students who have yet to get used to the recoil and noise when stepping into the booth for the first time.
Anyway, a box of CCI’s later, I’m heading out with a significantly smaller “bar tab” than shooting 9’s, and I’m also fighting the urge to get the bigger “Tupperware gun,” a.k.a. the G19 (insert Steely Dan melody here).
It was also a rather busy Sunday morning at the range, with lots of couples hitting the lanes. Here are some nice folks whom you’d want on your team for the Zombie Apocalypse finals.
